Scanning and OCR
Text scanning--through Optical Character Recognition (OCR)--is incredibly useful when transcribing paper books into digital editions. It can also be useful when you want digital versions of other kinds of paper documents. (For example, you could scan handouts, worksheets, syllabi, evaluations, etc. that have only existed in paper format.) Whatever your intended use, the Scholars' Lab in Alderman library has the staff and the machines to help, including top-loading scanners for stacks of loose papers. For a preview, here's an intro to text scanning/OCR that considers the program (OmniPage) used in UVA's labs.

Instructional Scanning Services
ISS at the library will find, scan, and upload materials for your courses to Toolkit. You can make requests through the administrative features of Toolkit: just choose the "Library Scanning Services (Electronic Materials Request)" link and complete the form.
Research computing
Advanced users may want to take advantage of the support UVA offers for research computing and digital projects. ITC's Research Computing Support Group will consult with you about your objectives.
Training for students
The library staff are dedicated to helping students discover how to use the library and its resources. They will arrange tours for your class, and even create specific resource pages for your course.
- ENWR Classes: ENWR Writing Instructors can arrange for their library instruction through Meridith Wolnick: mattball@virginia.edu or 982-2077. Includes info on VIRGO, searching for articles, evaluating web sites, plagiarism issues, etc.
- All other English classes: Christine Ruotolo (ruotolo@virginia.edu or 982-2652)) can help your students find and use relevant research materials, both print and electronic, for their assignments and papers. She can also prepare customized research guides that you can post on your course web page or Toolkit site. Additionally, she can arrange visits to Special Collections or library orientation.
Real-time chat with a librarian
Get research answers and advice fast through a web form or AIM. Hours are typically 11:00 am through midnight. That contact page also has addresses and numbers for reference librarians throughout the library system.
