Abstract:

This is a site clearly devoted to promoting the business of the Witch Dungeon Museum, by giving a brief semi-sensationalistic overview of the events leading up the the Salem Witch trials, with little specific detail and questionable accuracy due to broad generalizations. There is mention of the Parris family and his accusing daughters, as well as brief allusions to the hangings, a man pressed to death, two dogs who were hanged for giving someone the evil eye, and the tantalizing phrase: "The Devil had come to Salem". In terms of design, the site is primarily textual, with an introduction; links to 3 unimpressive photos of a stockade, the museum's menacing exterior, and a jail placard; a schedule of tours; a map for directions; and a series of 3 different levels of educational handouts designed to be completed by visiting elementary, middle school, and high school groups. Although the purpose of the museum is advertised as being purely educational, the accuracy of that education and the treatment of the Salem Witch trials from an unsensationalized perspective is questionable given the highly generalized introduction and "haunted house" appearance of the museum's exterior.
