Although the events of the Salem Witch Trials took place well over three hundred years ago, they continue to intrigue a great many people even today. Indeed, the legacy of the Salem Witch Trials includes everything from academic inquiry to entrepreneurial scheming. Further, unlike much of our country's history, the Witch Trials of Salem are far from forgotten. But, how are they remembered? This is the chief question we have kept in mind when composing these brief reviews of websites devoted to the Salem Witch Trials.
This project stems from the fact that the web, for all its virtues, can be a relatively unreliable source of information. In this project, we have attempted to lay down some relatively objective standards by which one may determine the quality of a variety of different Salem-related sites on the web. We have grouped the sites so that one may browse the various sites by either category (including Academic, Educational, Links, Memorials, Museum/Tourism, Popular Culture, and Religious), or by rank, with the rankings ranging from one to four stars. In every site reviewed we have provided brief descriptions of various aspects of the sites and have judged three elements--authenticity, accuracy, and navigability, on a point system, with one being the lowest and four being the highest. We have striven for as high a degree of objectivity as possible when passing judgment upon these sites.
