Stove or Pich

The back of the stove faces into the main room and is the main sleeping area. There is a shelf built into the stove itself. This is considered the best sleeping spot in the house and usually the eldest couple and the smallest children get to sleep in this area. In the Latysh house, it is Baba Polia's spot.

Next to the shelf that reaches into the stove itself and lower down, there is a large platform that serves as the main sleeping area. The platform is made of wood and is usually at least partially over a section of the clay stove for warmth. It is covered with quilts, pillows, and blankets. This construction and layout is typical.
