THIS WEEK WE WILL BE IN CLEMONS 407 FROM 6-7

discussing conceptual art and installation art as per this week's homepage.

AND IN CLEMONS 201 FROM 7-8.30

attending a multimedia presentation by digital media artists Kevin and Jennifer McCoy, who will disccus their new media art, built from databases of cartoon and classic movie imagery.

Their work plays upon the capacity of digital technology to fragment, store, and analyze audio and video material. Part of the Virginia Festival Film Society's Sample This! Collage series, the event will take place at UVA's Clemons Library, Room 201 at 7 PM and is free to the public. This program is cosponsored by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, the McIntire Department of Art, the Media Studies Program and Brown College.

The Brooklyn-based couple creates projects addressing how human thinking is structured through genre and repetition. In order to focus attention on these structures, they often reexamine classic TV programs, cartoons, and works of science fiction. The artists have likened the basic concept behind their art to "a suitcase of 45's" and "a film that's like a deck of cards." According to P.S. 1: "Together they have made a wide range of video, installation, new media and performance works dealing with the cultural manifestations of technology in the world. Formally these projects arise from an interest in the modular, language-like nature of digital information and its recombinant possibilities" (P.S. 1).

The McCoys have exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, P.S.1, Postmasters Gallery, and The New Museum in New York. International exhibitions include projects at ZKM, The Cornerhouse Gallery (Manchester, UK), and Van Laere Gallery (Antwerp, Belgium) and an upcoming show at F.A.C.T. (Liverpool, UK). In 2002 they received a Creative Capital Grant for Emerging Fields and in 2001 they received an award for New Media from the Colbert Foundation. Articles about their work have appeared in Art in America, Artforum, The Wire, dArt International, Spin Magazine, Feed, and The Independent.

SUGGESTION FOR NEXT WEEKS MUSIC DISUCSSION

Next week during the music discussion I have a propostion for a "music experienced like no other." I have a CD set by the Flaming Lips...don't know if you all have heard of them but they are pretty damn cool. Anyways it's a 4 CD set in which you put each CD in a different player and play them at the same time to form a "cohesive" song. I thought this would be a perfect example of "music as collage". What I need from you all is if anyone has a small boombox of some sort if you could bring it to class. We only need 4 so I guess we can talk about it in class tomorrow as to who can bring it the following week.

TUESDAY'S SEMINAR DISCUSSION LOCATION WILL BE CLEMONS 407

Please arrive promptly at 6 pm. We will spend approximately one hour discussing plunderphonics as it relates to collage and new media.

FOR THE MUSIC SET LISTS

Click here. Feel free to continue adding sets as you see fit. Another purge may or may not be required. Everything that's up now will be up through Friday am at least, and more likely through the weekend if space permits and people need the extra time to access the files.

HOW TO BE A MIXMASTER BY FOLLOWING THESE EASY STEPS, VOL I.

our music collection is being stored under the private directory on the cti server. usually, you would update the site by adding html documents to the public directory. to upload music, the process is the same--just drag and drop your mp3 files into the PRIVATE directory instead of the public. within the private directory, there is a subfolder called 'shared music.' put your mp3s there! make sure they are labeled clearly, and add the track info to the current setlist on the music page. current mp3s will remain in the folder until they are deemed passe, at which time they will be eradicated [by jim, not us]. so pay attention, and download the songs you want to make sure you don't miss out. to download songs, select the items you want, right click and then select DOWNLOAD (you will then be asked to select a location for the files on your machine...do it!). then wait.

FURTHERMORE, the music page needs your help. please make your additions to the table! this will be a great resource [and a great example of collage] once we've all made contributions. add relevant images and album info to the cells of the table by following [copy and paste!] the code for the examples already posted.

VOTING FOR THE MDST 322 MIX

Polls close at 8 pm on Sunday. Post to your blog before then. Burn your own or contact Ben Cummings for help if you need a copy made.

EVENTS FOR THE COMING WEEK: 03.25-03.31

On Friday 03.26 between 5.30 and 7.30 pm, check out the Fourth Friday reception at the University of Virginia Art Museum for a new exhibition relating to collage. This week, the opening celebrates two new exhibitions at the museum. The The Jefferson Suite: An Installation by Carrie Mae Weems, explores the role of genetics and specifically DNA in the formation of our identities and society. In her multimedia installation, digitally-produced images on muslin cloth and canvas accompany an artist-recorded audio piece. On view from March 24-May 23, 2004, the exhibition focuses on thirteen cultural turning points, including representations of Charles Darwin, Dolly (the first cloned sheep), Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings, as well as President Clinton and Monica Lewinsky.

Also on view is a second new exhibition, Exploring Identity: Work by Southern Jewish Women Artists, along with works in Waking Dreams: Book Art and "Literary Art" from the Collection, as well as, of course, American Collage, which is drawn from our collection as well as from works on loan from the prestigious Phillips Collection.

On Tuesday 03.30 at 7 pm, Vicki Bennett, aka "People Like Us," will be dropping some plunderphonic knowledge at the Vinegar Hill Theatre.

the people like us homepage has a wealth of links to performance clips, as well as discographies, biographies, etc. get a feel for Bennett's work before the show--you'll appreciate the experience more...

On Tuesday 03.30 at 8 pm, check out the first installment of the Spring Film & Discussion series at Runk Green Room, Hereford College. We'll be watching American Splendor, based on the autobiographical comics of Harvey Pekar, a hilarious, grumpy, obsessive observer of everyday drama. The film, which landed on more than 200 top 10 movie lists last year, combines actors' portrayals of Pekar and his friends with documentary footage and animated sequences. Hereford Fellow and UVA English department lecturer Ken Parille will help us to sort out the story and connect it to the world of comic books and graphic novels.

Through March 31, COLLAGE NOW! AT THE MCGUFFEY ART CENTER
The McGuffey Art Center is located at 210 Second Street, NW.
Hours: TUESDAY - SATURDAY 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; SUNDAY 1:00 p.m. to 5:00p.m.; MONDAY- Closed.
