EVENTS AND NOTES

Be sure to attend a screening of The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, a 2003 documentary re: the failed April 2002 coup attempt against Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez, directed by Kim Bartley and Donnacha O'Briain. It's part of OffScreen's Film Series for the semester, and it will be showing on Sunday 02.29 at 7 pm and 9.30 pm.
Although, some disagree about the film's accuracy. (Petition to the BBC to have the film examined more closely.)

.

Tuesday 03.02 is popularly known in the U.S.A. as "Super Tuesday" because of the number of delegates available to the opposition party in the primary elections. A map of this year's Democratic Party primaries shows delegates up for grabs in the following states: California (440), Connecticut (61), Georgia (102), Hawaii (29), Maryland (98), Massachusetts (121), Minnesota (86), New York (284), Ohio (159), Rhode Island (32), Vermont (22), and Washington (95).

SUGGESTED ASSIGNMENTS

1. Hypertext Response: Document the presentation of the week's news across various media outlets, from internet to newspaper to television. Note discrepancies. Note uses of collage in the presentation of information (from photo/caption relationship to the multiple tickers of the cable news channels). How do different news outlets structure their content, in print, digital, and/or video form? What are the political implications of such choices?

2. Web Presence: Help complete our directory of domestic, international and internet news sources.

Political Blogs

      Candidate Blogs
John Kerry's campaign has put together a blog.
John Edwards has a Family Blog.
Wes Clark has a general campaign blog, which facilitates discussion amongst his supporters. Blog for America is Howard Dean's official weblog

And not to leave out the lone GOP candidate and current Prez: Bush has got a blog too.

All of these potentially presidential blogs are in the group authored spirit of a weblog, but all seem to lack any input from the actual candidate (upon first glance at least).

General list of all sorts of political blogs here

Entertainer or political commentator? Here's Bill Maher's blog.

Political commentator or "nattering nabob of negativism"? Here's Greg Palast's blog.

The bloggers of Iran are getting networked. Here's a news story from the Associated Press.

You can find Persian language blogs from Iranians here and here. You can find English language blogs from Iranians here and here and here.

Finally, here's a more complete list of blogs by Iranians. But if you read some of these blogs in the USA, beware! According to this article from The New York Times, the USA Treasury Department considers any "collaboration on and editing... resulting in substantive enhancements or alterations" to manuscripts published in Iran as a "provision of prohibited services."

What happens when you take Jane Fonda, John Kerry and Photoshop? Read this article from The Washington Post to find out. If you're interested in a truly strange intersection of mass media and new media, here's more on the doctored and undoctored photographs.

Cavalier Daily columnist Jim Prosser's 2003.11.18 editorial on "Politics for the Digital Age".

Slate columnist Chris Suellentrop on Howard Dean's 'open-source politics'.

State of the Union - This is a collage of sorts, creating a truly hilarious, if largely inaccurate portrayal of last year's State of the Union address.

Dean Remixes - A diligent individual named Caner Ozdemir has put together a collection of remixes inspired by Howard Dean's scream-ful speech after the Iowa Caucuses. Very entertaining.

News Collage - Found this link, haven't had a lot of time to look into it, but it's really interesting, link based collage.
