Summer Clerkship in the Labor Movement
TO: Second-Year VELLA members

RE: Summer Clerkship in the Labor Movement
DATE: September 17, 1998
The Legal Department of the Communications Workers of America (CWA)
is looking for a 2nd-year UVA Law student to work as a law clerk in the
national headquarters offices next summer.
This position involves extensive legal research and writing. In
addition to the usual internal legal memoranda, clerks may also work on
briefs for direct submission to federal and state courts. Typically,
there are opportunities to observe and/or participate in labor
arbitrations and court proceedings. In addition to working with labor
lawyers, clerks often deal directly with client representatives, such as
labor organizers, bargaining reps, and union officers.
Issues and laws encountered include: traditional labor law under
the
NLRA and RLA, labor arbitration, Title VII and other discrimination
laws,
internal union matters, class actions, state torts arising from the
employment relationship, contracts, Fair Labor Standards Act issues, and
a
variety of non-employment/labor law issues that an international union
often must handle.
CWA represents workers in the telecommunications industry,
television
and print media, and the airline industry, as well as public employees.
The offices are located in downtown Washington, DC, one block from
Georgetown Law Center, and just a few from the U.S. Capitol and Union
Station.
If interested, please email me at gjc2g@virginia.edu, for more
information. I have worked at this clerkship for 2 summers and have
been
asked to find another UVA law student to fill it for 1999. Hours, by
the
way, rarely exceed a regular 7 or 8-hour workday.
Thanks.
