Student Voices: What is UVa and Who Are Its Students?

Letter, William H. Leary, Sidney Kamerman, and Robert Fisher

When collections for Mississippians in the wake of Freedom Summer were vandalized by University students, the organizers of the drive question what Honor can mean in a community that admits vandals to its midst. The Cavalier Daily, 5 January 1965

"'Gentlemanly; Attire: Meaningful Tradition for University Students"

The physical manifestation of gentlemanly behavior, the celebrated Virginia coat and tie, came under increasing attack during the Sixties. The author of this article in the orientation issue of The Cavalier Daily defends the tradition and denies that it leads to conformity. The Cavalier Daily, 1 September 1965

"University is a Good State U: Heretic Speaks Out"

Inovking Jefferson's admonition against flattery, the anonymous author deflates the old idea that UVa is the Harvard of the South, claiming it is only second-rate, refuting the ultimate value attributed to the Honor System, an deven denying that students look like gentlemen anymore. The Cavalier Daily, 22 February 1968

Letter, Rabin Randolph Lind

Lind argues that the University should not be afraid to be "'out of touch' with the times," believing that this quality is what give the University such unique and valuable traditions. He is opposed to coeducation and an increase in size and wants the students to break out of apathy and rally against the proposed changes. The Cavalier Daily, 6 February 1969

"For Our Liberated Women 'Personhood is Our Right'"

At an historically all-male school, the authors of this article articulate a vision of men and women living together in harmony. Charlottesville Women's Liberation, The Cavalier Daily, 14 September 1970

"By God, I Think They're Here to Stay"

The author humorously, but seriously, examines some changes that may be wrought by the admission of women. Steve Grimwood, The Cavalier Daily, 14 September 1970
