Attached to the Past

Southern history and heritage still play a tangible role in University life. The illustration and caption were published the day after the sit-in on the Corner. The Cavalier Daily, 28 February 1961

"Sit-Ins at the University"

The editors of The Cavalier Daily reproach students and faculty who participated in an attempted sit-in on the University Corner. Their chief offense is a breach of the gentleman's code: they stuck their necks out for a cause.

Letter, Alex Henney

Henney objects to the Cavalier Daily editorial concerned about sit-ins tarnishing the University's reputation, claiming it is an attempt to smother individualism and part of the "cult" of the gentleman at UVa. The Cavalier Daily, 3 March 1961

Letter, Malcolm Scully

Scully responds to the same editorial as Henney and contrasts the University of the Old South with one devoted to more academic principles. The Cavalier Daily, 9 March 1961
