Implementation Plan:
Court turns down UVa's plan
"Hereford Refutes Quote
for Coeducation"
As this chart reveals, the University's original population goal for women was quite comparable to other schools. Administrators never intended for women to present in numbers equal to men. The ACLU suit and the Higher Court's focus on the school's implementation plan elimated UVa's intentions to cap women at 35 percent. The Cavalier Daily, date
"Coeducation May Cause
Transfer Discrimination"
One of the primary concerns for coeducating the University of Virginia is the potentially negative effect it would have on Mary Washington College, the coordinate college of the University. This article explains the often asked question of how the University can provide female citizens of the state with the best available state education while protecting the quality of Mary Washington's enrollment. Another question of primary concern is whether or not students at Mary Washington could receive priority in transfer admissions. The Cavalier Daily, 9/29/69
"Visitors Reject Hereford
Plan"
This article, though lacking an investigative push, states that the BOV refuses to pass Hereford's plan to gradually co-educate over the next ten years. His plan included capping the number of female students at 35 percent after that 10 year span. The "bugging system" at the BOV meeting insinuates that the state was listening to their discussion. This may have pressured the BOV to not support Hereford's gradual implementation plan. The Cavalier Daily, 10/06/69
