Shopping in the Prosperous Sixties, In a 1964
issue celebrating America's consumer prosperity, Life Magazine showcased
this Supergrant store in Rockville, Md.: 25,000 shoppers per week visited
the store and the shelves had over 7,500 different food items; Americans
spent $90 billion on staple foods annually, Life declared. Many Americans
believed that the nation's consumer expansion, rising GDP, and Great Society
