Mayor's Relief Project, 1931, Detroit's Mayor Murphy created public works projects to help provide jobs and generate economic activity. Projects such as cutting wood to sell or to trade for food, such as this relief project under Mayor Murphy, building roads, clearing land for development, and other works helped to put money in the pockets of some Americans and offer a bit of hope. The mayor's wood-splitting project helped mainly males, as many of the public programs were geared to young men and male breadwinners, the "traditional" wage-earners. Source: Detroit Free Press.
