cartoon appeared in the conservative periodical The Fellowship Forum. The
illustration, representing Smith as the pawn of the Catholic hierarchy,
was typical of the extreme anti-Catholic Klan propaganda. The 1928 campaign
helped to inflame these passions and prejudices and polarized the nation.
