) Pershing Disembarking at Boulogne-Sur-Mer in France, 1917, General John Pershing, leader of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) in Europe, became a legendary war figure. His tactical and leadership skills and his ability to negotiate with powerful leaders brought him great acclaim during WWI. After declaring war on Germany in April 1917, President Wilson sent Pershing to Europe in command of the AEF. In this photo Pershing has just arrived in France.
