Gassed (detail), The British War Memorials Committee of the Ministry of Information commissioned the American painter John Singer Sargent to paint a large-scale war scene for a projected Hall of Remembrance in London. Sargent's work, completed in the Winter of 1918-1919, commemorated the sacrifice, honor, and spirit of war. Sargent captured the moment at which German soldiers released mustard gas on British troops in France, on the Western Front.
