President Roosevelt and the Monster Steam Shovel,
Huge pieces of machinery such as this steam shovel enabled men to conceive
of and build the Panama Canal. Posing with this piece of machinery, President
Roosevelt and his iron maiden symbolize the factors that were contributing
to the nation's growth: technological development and industrial production
went hand in hand with national expansion, economic dominance, and foreign
trade. Source: Willis Abbott, Panama and the Canal in Picture
and Prose (1913).
