Theodore Roosevelt and Rough Riders Here we see Theodore Roosevelt and the well-known "Rough Riders" during the Spanish-American War in 1898. In this picture, Roosevelt and the American troops pose in their full valor and glory and their pride in strength and physical prowess. Roosevelt's love of the "strenuous life" fit well with this period of international expansion, which had transformed the nation into a world power.
