Building, Interior," The functional design of the building's interior
contrasted sharply with the monumental exterior as Americans celebrated
both function and form in the Gilded Age. The discovery of new ways to bridge
long distances via railways, to transmit sound and electricity, and to produce
seemingly indestructible building materials gave many Americans a glorious
faith in the nation's future and in man's ability to order nature. Source:
