| The cosmos of most African societies is composed of spirits who control or influence the health, happiness and well being of each individual and the society as a whole. These spirits are under the influence of the African creator God and serve, just as the saints and angels under the creator God of Christianity, to help their followers cope with everyday life and its turmoils. These spirits are contacted and honored using masks and objects westerners call the Art of Africa. While these objects are indeed works of art, they not produced for the sake of art alone, but for their usefulness in creating and maintaining social harmony in African societies, and the health and well being of the individuals within these societies. | |||||||||||||||||
