Eshu,
The Messenger |

|
Eshu, the flute player, is a mischievous god, better
known at the trickster, is always present during divination. It is he
who conveys the Yoruba's sacrifice to the other gods. He is a friend of
Orunmila and guardian of the ritual process. (Yoruba Sculpture
48) Eshu can deliver the Yoruba from his pain, or he can send the wrath
of the gods to cause even more misfortune, so making the proper sacrifice
is important. It is here that the wisdom and skill of the diviner play
such an important role. He must prescribe the exact sacrifice needed to
maintain harmony and health in the community.
