The 75,000 Kota of Gabon are a peaceful people who migrated to their current lands in the 18th century. Their society is primarily agrarian, and many practice slash an burn farming in the rain forest regions in which they live. Hereditary leaders govern most villages, and there is no centralized government. Traditional Kota religion focuses on ancestor worship, but as a result of European colonialism, many people have been converted to Christianity. 7 |
