In Punu society, the mukudj masquerade is an extremely important and exciting event. These performers invoke strong magic through their dances, and because of their powers, they often serve as ambassadors for their respective villages. 14 For example, mukudj maskers from different areas often compete with one another to enhance the prestige of their towns. The entire community participates in the masquerade as the spectators sing songs to guide the masker and drummers control the tempo of the performance with their music. In addition, the masker, who dances in silence, uses palm branches called Miantsu to emphasize his gestures and communicate with the audience. 14 He often encourages them to join in the dance as he will separate the women from the men and then have them form circles around him. During the masquerade, the performer will often alternate between fluid graceful motions and aggressive movements to keep the crowd focused and alert. In addition he uses gestures to teach audience members proper behavior and their responsibilities to society. 14 |
