Prayer Flags -- by David Swan

Prayer flags are an essential element in the practice of Tibetan Buddhism‹prayer flags are a method to spread offerings, prayers, and blessings throughout the world. They are sacred objects that invoke wisdom, compassion, and strength; protect against negative influences; and help one to overcome obstacles. They can even increase prosperity and long life, and promote peace and harmony for all sentient beings. Yet prayer flags are also meant to fade and disintegrate over time, to be joined and replaced with new prayer flags‹just as all life eventually fades and is renewed by new life.

The prayer flag, this effectual force for communication and change, provides the inspiration for my project. If a project is meant to create a space, why not create a space where aspirations and good will can be scattered on the wind. In a space hung with my own prayer flags I will display what is precious and important to my life‹and I hope that the wind will carry my messages and aspirations around the world, to provide a positive influence on the lives of others.
