Equinae -- by Kristen Nyce

It is an amazing opportunity to develop a relationship with an animal like a horse but it is also a tremendous amount of work. To properly care for a horse an individual needs to be willing to sacrifice a significant portion of their day to the maintenance and upkeep of the equine¹s well being. This entails the daily rituals of feeding, grooming, exercising, cleaning stalls as well as monthly appointments with blacksmiths, veterinarians, dentists and other clinicians. The maintenance of a horse is a never-ending cycle that must be carried forth day in and day out.

I am interested in exploring these cycles and the nature of this relationship between horse and owner. It seems to me that as much as the owner owns the horse when it comes down to it perhaps it is the horse that in fact governs the owner to perform certain tasks.

I plan to obtain an invisible horse and take care of it for the remainder of the semester. The invisible horse will be cared for just as any other horse would be. Feeding will be twice a day. Grooming will be done on a regular basis as will any cleaning of stalls etc. The invisible horse will be just as any other equine but in its invisibility will allow the acts and rituals of the owner to be more apparent. My hopes in carrying out these tasks everyday are to showcase these daily events as acts of service and homage to the mythic horse.
