In a Vacuum -- by Lindsey Corcoran
From suburban sprawl to information overload to air so hot that you cannot breathe, the effects of a modern, post-industrial society are frequently overwhelming. There is a tendency to feel alienated and adrift from human connection. A sense of almost drowning in this modern life of the almost twenty-first century. For myself, these feelings have become exacerbated over the past six months as I’ve been suffering from a very bad depression due to personal problems that began last year when my father suffered a severe heart attack. Things have recently climaxed as my parents have begun divorce proceedings. These feelings people suffer at times of drowning in one’s life have been all I’ve thought of for the past nine months. Depression makes you feel paralyzed so that you think you are running in quicksand. Instead of the exploration of space, I intend to deal with what happens when there is no space. When your life is closing in on you, and you have no choice or control over what is occurring. The image below was originally a photograph I took of one of my friends. This is a rough take of what I hope a portion of the film I plan to create looks like.
