Rhizosphere -- John Leahy
The motivation behind this project stems from the desire to dig into the earth, loosen, and turn over organic matter, uncovering an underground microcosm and exposing its vital inhabitants for examination and cultivation. It will be a science project that investigates the correlation between two symbiotic spheres, a societal organization, SERP, and a microbiological ecosystem, the rhizosphere. This will be achieved by recreating a rhizomatous environment within the home of the social organization. A magnified study will be completed on the introduced organisms and their impact within this created environment. |

The cultivation space
chosen for the experiment is located in the foyer of SERP, 163 Rugby Road.
The foyer will be seen as a root from which all activity within the house
flows and returns. It is the first space experienced upon entering the
house and will serve as the harbor for foreign and native microorganisms.
A growing medium rich in nutrients will be developed and installed within
the space. A variety of microorganisms will be introduced into the sphere
and stimulated to promote cultivation. The resulting microbial milieu
will be observed and recorded. All data will be compiled and presented
by the research scientist on April 1, 2000. Potential conclusions will
highlight the complex communication that occurs between organisms and
is necessary to nurture cooperative habitation in the effort to survive. If you would like to hear a sample of the artist describing his work, please click here. |
