DownRail is a project about the Romance, History, and Experience of the Charlottesville Railroad System. The user will be able to walk along the tracks using a technology called Quicktime Virtual Reality, and experience first hand the back yard of Charlottesville. In addition, I will include local history related to different points along the railroad and perhaps movies with interviews of local train gurus. The railroad changed modernity and stands now as a graveyard of industrialism, and the visible boundary between social groups in the city. It is haunted by railroad wrecks, dilapidated buildings and warehouses, crossing bridge after bridge, steal beam after steal beam. Walking down the tracks is wandering back in Charlottesville's history.
