The Reaction

This is episode 5.

editing crew:

Melissa, Rupa, Lin (technical consultant)

content:

It will consist solely of viewer reaction shots. People in different settings (sitting on couches, sipping margaritas in a pool, lying on the floor murdered, etc) are watching a TV screen that is not visible in the shot. The soundtrack is a mix of muffled dialogue coming from the TV and the local sound environement. The images swithches alternatively from the show being watched to the reactions of the viewers. There is no need to coordinate viewer reaction with an actual episode. Whether it's disgust, amusement, surprise, indifference or just sleep, it will certainly fit the nothingatall aesthetics and philosophy.

technicalities:

You will submit short snippets of DV video representing reactions of a person (or other creature) or a group of persons (or other creatures) to video content shown on a TV in front of them.
This can be stuff you have shot yourself or just found footage.
The footage submitted has to be trimmed down to the exact useable part (nothing else but the TV-watching action).
The length of each snippet is entirely optional. As a reference: anything less than 5 seconds or more than 1 minute makes it hard on the editor to use.
The reaction has to be shot from a frontal angle, i.e. from the TV's point of view. There will be no dialogue.

Sample, shooot and edit video by yourselves or in groups (doesn't matter).

deadlines and formats:

Deadline for submission: Wednesday, April 7 for UW Madison students, Wednesday, March 31 for UVA students
Each crew (Charlottesville and Madison) will submit their materials grouped on one miniDV tape.

tips:

A recommendation: simulate the TV glare on the faces of the viewers with an actual TVset. You can place it closer than usual to maximize the effect. Let your phantasy roam as far as lighting is concerned: borrow a projector? Also, did you know that 'dark' scenes in a movie require actually _more_ light sources? If you want your footage to look good, discretely lit the background, even if it is assumed to be dark.

Below are storyboard suggestions, make your own or adapt one of these:
