The main objective of this project is to deal with the current condition of the Ivy landfill and the act of landfilling in a productive and ethical manner.  This objective is sought through means equal to, if not greater than those used to make the landscape that which it is today.  It is an attempt to accelerate the "reset" process of our environment while recognizing that "starting over" is impossible and not necessarily desirable.

LANDFILL MINING
The proposal begins with the installation and incorporation of a rail line linking the site and specifically a new hyper-sorting center for municipal solid waste to the City of Charlottesville.  In addition to this a connection will be made to Interstate 64 through the North end of the site allowing the connection to Dick Woods road to be closed.  Waste will continue to be brought to the site, sorted into recyclable materials, while non-recyclables will be sent to regional means of disposal.  As Charlottesville's waste will continue to be brought to this site by rail, local rail networks will be set in place within the road infrastructure of the site.  Upon this network, the mining operation will begin to extract the potentially valuable material from the ground, salvage material that can be recycled, compost other materials, and send untreatable materials off site.
