The Rivanna Solid Waste Authority (RSWA) owns and operates the Ivy Sanitary Landfill, located approximately ten miles west of Charlottesville, Virginia. The landfill has operated continuously since 1968, and includes approximately 307 totoal acres, about 87 of which have been developed as waste cells. Types of materials disposed of at the facility include household waste, construction and demolition debris, and asbestos which is buried in a sepcial area. In the past, solvents and paint products were disposed of in a special paint pit area but this practice was discontinued about 1980. There are currently eight waste disposal cells, three of which are lined and capped, three are lined and being used for active waste disposal, and two are inactive and not lined or capped.
