How to set up your computer to allow typing in and display of languages other than English
Macintosh
OS X

  • Available languages depend on the version of OS X. OS X was released with fewer languages than OS 9. OS X (10.0 - 10.1.5) has support for Western and Eastern European languages (including Russian, Ukrainian, and Bulgarian). Chinese, Japanese and Korean language support for OS X (10.1.x) can be added with a Language Support Update from the Apple website. To have language support for Arabic, Devanagari, Greek, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Hebrew and Thai, you have to purchase OS X 10.2.
    1. Click on "System Preferences" and then click on the "International" icon.Click on Keyboard Menu tab. Check the boxes next to the languages you would like to have appear in your keyboard menu.
    2. Close the International window, quit System Preferences. A US flag should appear in the taskbar at the top of your screen. Click on the flag to get the drop-down keyboard menu and select the keyboard you would like to use.

OS 9

  • If you have not already done so, you need to install the appropriate Language Kit(s) on your computer. All of the available Language Kits are on your system CD. This includes system software for Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Czech, Devanagri,Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Hebrew, Hungarian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian.
    1. To install them, follow the Macintosh instructions for a custom installation, and select the Language Kits option. Be aware that you cannot have the necessary system software forboth Arabic and Persian installed at the same time (i.e., if you have Arabic already installed and would like to use Persian, you must first remove the Arabic and then install Persian, andvice versa).
    2. Once you have installed the Language Kit(s) you need to select a keyboard layout. (Note: you may select more than one keyboard layout; if you do, the available layouts will thenappear in the keyboard menu at the right side of the menu bar). Open the keyboard control panel, and open the Script pop-up menu. Select an installed script system (for example, for Russian you would select the Cyrillic script system). Select one or more keyboard layouts.

Earlier versions

  • You will need to purchase and install the appropriate Language Kit(s) from Apple.
