Starr/Rose Hill
Star Hill is bounded by Ridge-McIntire Road on the east, West Main Street
on the south, Eighth Street on the west, and Preston Avenue on the
north. During the early part of the century, blacks in
Charlottesville desired to live on "Star Hill" because it was situated
on a higher ground. The higher ground served as a metaphor of
economic and social mobility. For this many black professional -
teachers, doctors, dentists, morticians, ministers, and businessmen
called Star Hill their "house on the hill".
