ON WAR

DuBois Chamberlayne

I hate the atmosphere of militarism-

I breeds from greed and shame.

For him who motivates such a mess

There is no decent name.

I hate the attitude that men take

Of things concerning war

They make themselves believe it will

Make them greater than they are.

I hate the "glory" that war brings

To the surviving force.

For I know it is a vain glory

Far worser than the worse.

I hate to see men choose to fight,

Who call themselves mortal men;

For when the day of reckoning comes

What shall befall them then?

I would that all people should undertake

To prove themselves normal.

'Tis normal for one to be humane

And otherwise abnormal.

So when we fight or plan to fight,

Remember we are not possessed

With normality of mind,

But rather manifesting ourselves to be

Of a lower animal kind.
