Rushnyk Maker

To help you realize the beauty, as well as the complex nature, of rushnyky we have made an interactive "Rushnyk Maker".

This is a two-page file which is opened by Microsoft Word. The "zoom" feature of Word should be adjusted (view, zoom, many pages, adjust the % zoom) so as to display both pages on screen at the same time, as shown below:

Suggested Uses

Children
The Rushnyk Maker can easily be used with children. The click and drag technology is easy to use and the product is colorful and produces a satisfying result for even small children. Children do not need to work through the explanation of rushnyky and the rushnyk tradition to have fun with Rushnyk Maker. They can easily emulate the work of adults without needing to learn how to embroider. The Rushnyk Maker provides quick gratification for little ones whose manual dexterity is not yet up to embroidery work.

Adults
The Rushnyk Maker is a quick and easy way to test out possible composition before beginning the task of embroidery. While the Rushnyk Maker, in its current form, will not produce a charted pattern, for those who are trying out new combinations, the program yields a quick and easy way of testing these and seeing whether or not they are aesthetically satisfying.

Adults will also benefit from the various supporting materials accompanying Rushnyk Maker. Many people of Ukrainian heritage wonder about the meanings of various patterns and designs that they have seen in their homes or elsewhere. Rushnyk Maker support provides a glossary of these and data about meaning and usage collected in Central Ukraine over the past 5 years. Thus, through Rushnyk Maker and the accompanying materials, adults can explore their heritage.
