Minutes for 9/6
VELLA Minutes - September 6, 2000
Intro
- Folks trickled in and we circulated a sign-in sheet
- Curtis Cooper (President) introduced himself
- The mailing listserve was explained. It is a group email
list through which people can send messages to all the
members. Curtis assured folks that it isn't a huge number
of emails. If you're reading this, you're probably on the
list - if not, let an officer know
- Dues are a measly $5 and can be paid by leaving a check
(made out to VELLA) or the money (be sure to include your
name somewhere!) in Sabrina Dennis's (Treasurer) mailbox
Speakers
- We like speakers and plan to have them
- Our first speaker will be a former VELLA co-president who
is now working for the Communication Workers of America.
Ideally, we will be able to have him and a management-side
representative speak sometime soon - possibly dealing with
issues surrounding the Verizon strike.
Administrative Stuff
- We've got a website...
or via the student activities pages from the law school).
It could use some updating and modernizing so if you're
good at all that, please let us know
Pro Bono
- Currently the Public Service Center has only 1 project in
our arena. It is a placement with the VA Justice Center for
Farm & Migrant Workers (Spanish required for client
contact). Talk to the Pubic Service folks if you're
interested.
Odds and Ends
- We chatted a bit about the history of the program and
about Rip Verkerke's involvement. Check out pells.org for
info on his employment law program at the law school.
- Natasha (VP) put forth a call for ideas and
suggestions...we are a relatively new group still trying to
figure out our footing so please let us know if you've got
any ideas or anything you'd like to see done
- We are going to the Biltmore for dinner at 7pm on
Thursday September 7, 2000…please join us to chill and
chat.
Cheryl Gastaldo (Secretary)
